I'm Just a Bass Player
Private Instruction
I am often asked "Do you teach?"  Well, the answer is "yes" and sometimes "no".  What makes the difference?  Well, here are the restrictions I have for accepting new students:
  1. You must be familiar with the bare bones basics of playing bass.  By that I mean you will have been playing for somewhere around a year or so, maybe active in a gigging band, and have familiarity with the notes on the fingerboard.  If you don't know where the C is located on your bass, that will be a deal killer.
  2. You must have an idea of what it is that you are trying to accomplish.  I realize that you'll be looking for lessons so you can play the bass better, but what type of music are you interested in?  Jazz, rock, pop, contemporary, country, etc .... your choices will help us decide if I can help you.  For what it's worth, I don't do metal or punk or any of their various sub-categories.
  3. You don't need to be able to read music notation fluently, but you will be required to be at least functional in understanding musical notation.  Knowing chord changes and understanding what 1st endings, 2nd endings, chorus/verse & repeats are will be very important in helping us decide if I'm the right teacher for you.
  4. You must be willing to practice on your own time so that our lessons don't get bogged down with stuff you should have practiced already.  You don't need to waste your time and money if you aren't willing to work on the lesson plans on your own time.

And basically, that's it!  What I am trying to get to here is that I'm not a good teacher for true beginners, but I'm pretty darn good with newbies that are looking to get past the root-five-root part of playing the bass.  Let's face it, learning to play the bass is pretty easy in the beginning .... much easier than the guitar or piano, for example.  But becoming a really good bass player is actually a lot harder than becoming a good guitar player.  Lots of reasons for that, and much too long to get into here, but trust me, advancing to the higher levels of bass playing is a pretty challanging task.

My program is fairly simple.  I will teach either at my home or via Skype.  My rates ae $50.00 for two 45 minute sessions ($25 a lesson), usually once a week or twice a month.  The frequency depends on how much free time you have to practice the lesson plans.  The very first lesson is no charge, future lessons are paid in advance.  The reason for the free first lesson is to be sure that you like the way I handle things, and so we can decide if I can help you.  I don't want to take your hard earned cash if I can't give you what you expect to get.

I don't have any issues with the type of bass you want to use .... 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 strings, upright or electric, long scale or short scale, whatever .... those decisions will be totally up to you and I'll gear your lesson plans to the type of bass you will be using.  I will use one of my basses that is comparable to the bass you select so that things like hand position, neck positions, etc will be the same.
